The Empire Story

In 1872 the original Empire locomotive came into being. That was the year that Virginia and Trucjee Railroad General Superintendant Henry M. Yerington ordered the steam locomotive. The engine was delivered to the V&T the following spring and was named “Empire” for the Empire City, located three miles east of Carson City which was an important territorial town and station on the Overland Route. It quickly entered freight service on the, line from Virginia City to Carson and Reno. In 1924 the Empire was sold and later donated to the Pacific Coast chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. Now it rests in the Central Pacific Railroad Passenger Station in Old Sacramento.

Today it’s legend still rolls on with the Empire Express and it’s famous dining car, serving the best home-style dishes from the classic area. Baldinis Empire Diner is an ode to the classic American Dining Car Diner.
